Abstract BRS TR271 is a new wheat cultivar released by Embrapa for Brazilian wheat-growing regions 1 and 2 of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná. It has high grain yield potential and a super-early cycle. It is widely adapted and is classified as bread wheat.

Abstract The wheat cultivar ‘BRS 331’ was developed by Embrapa. It results from an interspecific cross between wheat and maize by double-hapolid method. ‘BRS 331’ shows solid stem in the base of the plant, short leaves and super-early cycle to maturity. It is classified as bread wheat in all of the regions that is recommended in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar o número ideal de amostras, para a classificação comercial de cultivares de trigo (Triticum aestivum) quanto à média de força de glúten, no Rio Grande do Sul e no Paraná, principais estados produtores de trigo do Brasil. Resultados de análises de alveografia de amostras de grãos, provenientes de ensaios de competição de três cultivares de trigo (até 280 ensaios, em 11 anos), foram utilizados. O número ideal de amostras foi estimado com base nas propriedades da distribuição amostral da média, por região de adaptação, nos estados do Rio Grande do Sul e do Paraná. O número ideal variou de 13 a 22, 30 a 49, e 121 a 197 amostras por estado, respectivamente, para a margem de erro de 30, 20 e 10 unidades de força de glúten (W), com, no mínimo, 7, 16 e 63 amostras por região de adaptação e por estado, para a margem de erro de 30, 20 e 10 W, respectivamente. O número ideal de amostras para a classificação comercial de cultivares de trigo, no Rio Grande do Sul e no Paraná, é no mínimo de 13 amostras, por estado, e 7 de amostras, por região de adaptação e por estado, para a margem de erro de 30 W, valores que são superiores aos utilizados para a classificação pelos obtentores.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the optimal number of samples for commercial classification of wheat (Triticum aestivum) cultivars for gluten strength average, in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná, the main wheat producing regions in Brazil. The alveography analysis results of grain samples, from competition assays of three wheat cultivars (up to 280 experiments in 11 years), were used. The optimal number of samples was estimated based on the properties of the mean sampling distribution by adaptation region, in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná. The optimal number ranged from 13 to 22, 30 to 49, and 121 to 197 samples per state, respectively, for to error margin of 30, 20, and 10 gluten strength units (W), with minimum of 7, 16, and 63 samples per adaptation region and per state for error margin of 30, 20 and 10 W, respectively. The optimal number of samples for commercial classification of wheat cultivars, in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná, is of at least 13 samples per state and of 7 samples per adaptation region and per state for error margin of 30 W, which are higher values than those used by breeders for classification.

Abstract BRS 404 is a new wheat cultivar developed by Embrapa, indicated for rainfed conditions. It has a particularly good performance under heat and drought conditions. The grain yield is stable and BRS 404 is classified as bread wheat.

A cultivar de trigo 'BRS Marcante' foi desenvolvida pela Embrapa, envolvendo um híbrido F1 do cruzamento entre as linhagens PF 980533 e PF 970227 com a cultivar 'BRS Guamirim', realizado em telado, na Embrapa Trigo, no inverno de 2003. As gerações segregantes foram conduzidas pelo método genealógico e a linhagem resultante, nomeada de PF 080310. A cultivar caracteriza-se pela sua ampla capacidade de adaptação às condições de cultivo do sul do Brasil, pelo bom potencial de rendimento de grãos e qualidade industrial da classe Pão

The wheat cultivar 'BRS Marcante' was developed by Embrapa, as a result a cross between F1 hybrid between lines PF 980533 and PF 970227 with 'BRS Guamirim' and carried out in a green-house of Embrapa Wheat, on 2003 winter season. The segregate generations were conducted by genealogic method and the genotype resulted was named PF 080310. It has wide adaptation ability to south Brazilian conditions, high grain yield potential and belongs to Bread Class

BRS 374 is a wheat cultivar developed by Embrapa. It resulted from a cross between the F1 generation of PF 88618/Coker80.33 and Frontana/Karl. BRS 374 belongs to the soft wheat class, has a low plant height, a high potential grain yield, and white flour.

Cerca de 90% da produção de trigo no Brasil está localizada nos estados do Paraná, do Rio Grande do Sul e de Santa Catarina. Nesses estados, a variabilidade climática é muito expressiva, tornando a produção tritícola uma atividade de risco e fazendo com que o decréscimo da produção e da produtividade de trigo seja objeto de questionamento de grande número de investigadores. Este trabalho teve por objetivo verificar a influência da precipitação pluvial, da umidade relativa do ar e de excesso e déficit hídrico do solo no peso do hectolitro, peso de mil grãos e rendimento de grãos. Foram usados dados de experimentos com a cultivar de trigo Embrapa 16, conduzidos durante os anos de 1990 a 1998, em sete locais do Rio Grande do Sul e em quatro locais de Santa Catarina. A análise estatística realizada foi correlação múltipla. Verificou-se que: a) a precipitação pluvial e o excesso hídrico do solo afetaram negativamente o peso do hectolitro, peso de mil grãos e rendimento de grãos, e a umidade relativa do ar influenciou tanto positiva quanto negativamente essas variáveis; b) o déficit hídrico do solo afetou positivamente o peso do hectolitro, peso de mil grãos e rendimento de grãos após a maturação fisiológica, isto é, nos dez primeiros dias anteriores à colheita, e negativamente nos demais períodos.

About 90% of the wheat production in Brazil is located in Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states. In these states there is a considerable climatic variability and consequently wheat production becomes a risky activity. Therefore, the decrease of wheat production and grain yield has been analyzed by a great number of investigators. This work aimed to verify the influence of rainfall, relative humidity, and water excess and deficit on test weight, thousand kernel weight, and grain yield of wheat. Data of Embrapa 16 wheat cultivar, obtained during the 1990-98 period, in seven Rio Grande do Sul state locations, and in four in Santa Catarina were used. Statistical analysis used was multiple correlation. It was verified that: a) rainfall and water excess in soil affected negative test weight, thousand kernel weight, and grain yield of wheat, and relative humidity influenced positively as much as negatively such variables; b) soil water deficit affected positive test weight, thousand kernel weight, and the grain yield of wheat after the physiological maturation, that is, during the first ten days previous to the harvest of the crop, and negative for the other periods.

Na região tritícola sul-brasileira predominam invernos com temperatura baixa (mínima absoluta, em dias com geada, de até - 8,0ºC). No entanto, a incidência de elevada temperatura (máxima absoluta, em dias isolados entre outubro e novembro, de até 41,0ºC) pode ser encontrada durante todo o período de enchimento de grãos e na maturação fisiológica. Este trabalho teve por objetivos verificar a influência das temperaturas mínima e máxima na qualidade industrial e no rendimento de grãos. Foram usados dados de experimentos com trigo EMBRAPA 16, conduzidos nos anos de 1990 a 1998, em sete locais do Rio Grande do Sul e em quatro locais de Santa Catarina. A análise estatística realizada foi correlações múltiplas. Verificou-se que, nos diferentes períodos analisados: a) o aumento da temperatura máxima média resultou em acréscimo do peso de mil grãos, do rendimento de grãos, da força geral de glúten, da microssedimentação com dodecil sulfato de sódio e do número de queda: b) o peso do hectolitro (exceção feita ao período final de maturação fisiológica), o peso de mil grãos, o número de queda e a extração experimental de farinha foram influenciados negativamente pela temperatura mínima média; c) a temperatura mínima média influenciou positivamente a força geral de glúten, a relação P/L e a microssedimentação com dodecil sulfato de sódio.

Low temperature winters (absolute minimum temperature down to -8.0ºC, in frosty days) prevail in the southern Brazilian wheat cropping area. However, the incidence of high temperature (absolute maximum temperature, up to 41.0ºC, in some days in october and november) can ocurr throughout the grain filling period and during physiological maturation. This work aimed to verify the influence of minimum and maximum temperatures in the industrial quality and grain yield of wheat. Data of EMBRAPA 16 wheat, obtained during the 1990-98 period, in seven locations of the State of Rio Grande do Sul and in four locations of Santa Catarina were used. Statistical analysis performed was multiple correlations. It was verified that, in the different analyzed periods: a) the increase of the mean maximum temperature resulted in increment of thousand kernel weight, grain yield, gluten strength, sodium dodecyl sulphate microsedimentation test, and falling number: b) test weight (except for the final period of physiological maturation), thousand kernel weight, falling number, and milling quality were influenced negatively by the mean minimum temperature; c) the mean minimum temperature influenced positively gluten strength, P/L relation, and the sodium dodecyl sulphate microsedimentation test.

A qualidade industrial de trigo, além de ser afetada pelo genótipo, também é influenciada por fatores ambientes, como as condições meteorológicas prevalecentes durante a permanência da cultura na lavoura. Este trabalho teve por objetivo verificar a influência de variáveis meteorológicas, bem como do déficit e do excesso hídrico do solo, no peso do hectolitro (PH), no peso de mil grãos (PMG), na extração experimental de farinha (EXT), na força geral de glúten (W), na relação P/L (P/L), na microssedimentação com dodecil sulfato de sódio (SDS) e no número de queda (NQ). Foram usados dados de experimentos com trigo EMBRAPA 16, conduzidos nos anos de 1990 a 1998, em sete locais do Rio Grande do Sul e em quatro locais de Santa Catarina. A análise estatística realizada foi de componentes principais. Verificou-se que: a) a precipitação pluvial, a umidade relativa do ar e o excesso hídrico do solo influenciaram negativamente o PH, o PMG, o NQ, a P/L e o rendimento de grãos. O W, a EXT e a SDS foram afetados positiva e negativamente por essas variáveis, dependendo do período de avaliação estudado; b) a temperatura mínima influenciou positivamente a EXT, o W e a SDS. Para as demais variáveis, quando ocorreu influência da temperatura mínima, esta foi negativa; c) a temperatura média associou-se negativamente com o PH, com o PMG, com o NQ e com o rendimento de grãos e positivamente com a EXT e com o W. Para a P/L e para a SDS, a temperatura média afetou tanto positiva quanto negativamente; d) a temperatura máxima correlacionou-se negativamente com o rendimento de grãos e positivamente com a EXT. O W, a SDS e a P/L apresentaram períodos de correlação positivos e negativos com a temperatura máxima; e e) a radiação solar global influenciou positivamente todas as características estudadas, exceto a SDS.

Wheat baking quality, besides being affected by genotype, is also influenced by environmental factors, such as climate conditions during crop development in the field. This work aimed to verify the influence of climate variables and soil water deficit and excess on the following quality parameters: test weight (TW), 1,000 kernel weight (KW), experimental milling of flour (MIL), gluten strength (W), P/L relation (P/L), dodecyl sulphate microssedimentation test (SDS), and falling number (FN). Data obtained with Embrapa 16 wheat, in the 1990-1998 period in seven locations from Rio Grande do Sul State and four locations from Santa Catarina State were used. The statistical analysis used was the analysis of principal components. It was verified that: a) the sum of rainfall, the relative humidity of the air and the water excess influenced negatively TW, KW, FN, P/L and the grain yield. W, MIL, and SDS were both positively and negatively affect by these variables, depending on the period studied; b) minimum temperature influenced positively W, MIL, and SDS. For the other variables, when there was influence of minimum temperature, it was negative; c) the average temperature was negatively associated with TW, KW, FN, and grain yield, and positively with MIL and W. For P/L and SDS, the average temperature affected was either positive or negative; d) the maximum temperature was negatively correlated with grain yield and positively with MIL, W, SDS, and P/L presented positive and negative correlation periods with the maximum temperature; and e) the global solar radiation influenced positively all the studied characteristics, except for SDS.

A qualidade industrial do trigo é afetada por fatores genéticos e ambientais, como solo, clima, tratos culturais, e outros. O presente trabalho teve como finalidade avaliar o efeito de sistemas de manejo de solo e de rotação de culturas sobre características que definem a qualidade industrial de trigo (peso do hectolitro, peso de mil grãos, extração experimental de farinha, alveografia, teste de microssedimentação com lauril sulfato de sódio e número de queda). O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com parcelas subdivididas e três repetições. A parcela principal foi constituída pelos sistemas de manejo de solo (plantio direto, preparos convencionais de solo com arado de discos e de aivecas, e cultivo mínimo), e a subparcela, pelos sistemas de rotação de culturas (monocultura, um inverno e dois invernos sem trigo). O preparo convencional de solo com arado de discos e o cultivo mínimo reduziu o número de queda; o sistema de rotação com dois invernos sem trigo elevou o peso do hectolitro; a monocultura desse cereal reduziu o peso do hectolitro, elevou a força geral de glúten e a microssedimentação com lauril sulfato de sódio; a interação sistemas de manejo de solo, rotação de culturas e ano de cultivo afetou o peso de mil grãos e, o ano de cultivo teve grande influência em todas as características de qualidade industrial de trigo estudadas.

Wheat quality is affected by genetic and environmental factors such as soil, climate and cultural traits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of soil management and crop rotation systems on characteristics that define wheat industrial quality (hectoliter weight, thousand-kernel weight, milling quality, alveograph characteristics, sodium dodecyl sulphate microsedimentation test and falling number). The experimental design used was in complete randomized blocks, with split plots and three replications. Main plot consisted of the soil management systems (no-tillage system, conventional tillage with disc and moldboard plough and minimum tillage) and the subplot consisted of the crop rotation systems (monoculture, one winter and two winters without wheat). Conventional soil preparations with discs' plough reduced the falling number; the crop rotation systems with two winters without wheat increased the hectoliter weight; the monoculture of this cereal reduced the hectoliter weight, increased the gluten strength and the values obtained in the microsedimentation test with sodium lauril sulphate; the interaction of soil management, crop rotation system and year of management affected the weight of one-thousand grains and the year of cultivation had great influence in all characteristics of the industrial quality of wheat.

A demanda crescente pela integração lavoura-pecuária no planalto sul-rio-grandense direciona ao aproveitamento dos cereais de inverno para duplo propósito (forragem e grão). Assim, é necessário um melhor conhecimento dessas culturas relativamente à utilização como forragem e ao valor econômico dos grãos no uso potencial para alimentação humana ou animal. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência de cortes (um e dois), simulando pastejo bovino, na composição química dos grãos de aveia-branca (UPF 14), de aveia-preta (comum), de centeio (BR 1), de triticale (BR 4), de cevada (BR 2) e de trigo (IPF 55204 e PF 87451). Os cortes não afetaram, na média dos cereais, os valores de fibra bruta, de extrato etéreo, de energia bruta e de atividade ureática, tendo o teor de matéria mineral aumentado com dois cortes. Excetuando aveia-preta e cevada, com os cortes verificou-se incremento nos percentuais de proteína bruta. Entretanto, observou-se, na média dos cereais, redução com os cortes nos teores de extrativos não-nitrogenados. Os resultados obtidos conduzem à possibilidade de uso dos cereais de inverno para duplo propósito, com aproveitamento dos grãos sem maiores prejuízos à sua composição química.

An increased demand for activities integrating crop-cattle production in the Rio Grande do Sul plateau has contributed to a dual purpose use (forage and grain) of winter small grains. Therefore, a better knowledge on how to use these cereals for pasture, as well as on the economic value of grains and their potential use in human and animal foods, is necessary. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of cuts (one and two) simulating cattle grazing in the chemical composition of the grain of white oats (UPF 14), black oats Avena strigosa (comum), rye (BR 1), triticale (BR 4), barley (BR 2), and wheat (IPF 55204 and PF 87451). In the cereal average, cuts did not affect the values of crude fiber, fat, crude energy, and ureatic activity and led to increased levels of ash with two cuts. Excepting black oats and barley, an increase in crude protein percentuals with the cuts was observed. Nevertheless, a reduction in non-nitrogeneous substances was observed in the cereal average, with the cuts. These results suggest the possibility of using the winter cereals for dual purpose, using the grains without greater damages in their chemical composition.

Para atender às demandas por cultivares de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) com melhores níveis de rendimento, resistência a doenças e qualidade panificativa superior, foi recomendada para cultivo no Rio Grande do Sul, a partir de 1996, a cultivar EMBRAPA 52. Desenvolvida na Embrapa-Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Trigo, apresenta ciclo precoce, estatura média e resistência ao crestamento. Pode mostrar problemas relativos ao acamamento, em condições de elevada fertilidade do solo, e à germinação na espiga, em anos chuvosos na colheita. Até a sua recomendação, apresentou comportamento fitossanitário favorável em campo, sendo suscetível em plântula a cinco raças de ferrugem-da-folha e resistente a todas as raças de ferrugem-do-colmo ocorrentes no Brasil. É moderadamente suscetível à septoriose das glumas e suscetível ao carvão. Comporta-se como resistente em campo ao oídio e ao vírus-do-mosaico-do-trigo. No período 1993-95, 'EMBRAPA 52', foi o trigo de mais alto rendimento entre todos os testados, superando em 13% as testemunhas oficiais na média geral do Estado. Pelos testes de alveografia e farinografia, foi preliminarmente classificada na classe comercial superior, sendo indicada para panificação e para fabricação de massas alimentícias e de crackers.

In order to meet the demands for higher grain yielding wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, in addition to higher resistance levels to diseases and better breadmaking quality, the cultivar EMBRAPA 52 was released in 1996 for the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It was developed at Embrapa-Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Trigo, showing early cycle, mid-high stature, and resistance to aluminum soil conditions. It can show lodging problems under high soil fertility conditions and sprouting under delayed rains at harvest time. At releasing, it has shown good plant-health performance under field conditions. At seedling stage, it was susceptible to five races of leaf rust and resistant to all races of stem rust found in Brazil. It is moderately susceptible to glume blotch and susceptible to loose smut. It is resistant under field conditions to mildew and soil borne mosaic virus. Over the 1993-95 period, EMBRAPA 52 performed as the highest grain yielding wheat among all cultivars and lines tested in Rio Grande do Sul, producing 13% over the checks in the average of all locations of the State. Considering alveograph and farinograph tests, it was preliminarily classified as superior in the commercial class, being indicated for breadmaking and to manufacture crackers and pastry products.
